How to Make Sure Your Roofing Warranty Is Protecting You

It’s important to read and understand your roofing warranty’s terms and conditions because it protects you against issues like poor workmanship or low quality materials. However, not all roofing warranties are the same. Here’s how you can make sure that your roofing warranty is protecting you.

Manufacturer and Workmanship Warranties

It’s uncommon for most kinds of products, including roofs, to not have a manufacturer warranty. Manufacturer, material or factory warranties protect the customer against problems caused by manufacturing errors. On roofing systems, such problems include premature loss of granules or roofing blisters. Warranty coverage can vary between manufacturers – some will cover major components like shingles and sheet metal while others will include accessories or even the complete roofing system. When comparing estimates, make it a point to check the extent of the manufacturer warranty.

Workmanship or installation warranties provide coverage for problems caused by installation errors. For example, an asphalt shingle roof’s wind rating can be affected by incorrect nailing patterns. Failure to install flashing may leave vulnerable parts of the roof open to water infiltration. Workmanship warranties are typically offered through the roofing contractor, though some roofing manufacturers offer it through certified installers.

Warranty Exclusions

Warranty exclusions are conditions that will not be covered by your roofing warranty. Generally, these are conditions that are outside the control of either the roofer or manufacturer. The cost of storm damage roof repair is one such example – what many would count as “acts of God” – which is usually covered by homeowners’ insurance. Warranty exclusions are explicitly listed in the warranty paperwork.

It’s important to note that some exclusions may void the warranty coverage. One of these is not keeping up with required maintenance; another is making unauthorized modifications to the roof, such as DIY repairs. Reading and understanding this part of your warranty coverage not only helps make sure that you’re protected by your warranty but also helps make you avoid inadvertently voiding your coverage.
