Components of a Properly Installed Asphalt Shingle Roof

Proper installation is key to the longevity and weather performance of an asphalt shingle roof. Without it, you can expect various problems to manifest throughout its lifetime, including structural damage and costlier roof work. But how do you determine if your residential roofing system is built the right way using the correct materials and installation techniques? Here are some of the things you need to look for on your system:

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles cover the entirety of the roof structure, making it the most visible component. You can tell if they are installed properly if they have a uniform appearance and have enough nails to keep them in place. Each one should have at least four nails, though it can be more depending on the local weather conditions. Windy areas, for instance, require up to six nails to keep them intact. Roofers must make sure to use nails of the correct size. Nail heads that stick out may cause leaks and even dislodge the shingles should strong winds blow.

Flashings

Roof replacement contractors add flashing on areas of the roof that are vulnerable to water intrusion. These include vent pipes, chimneys and other similar protrusions. Some require only a single sheet of metal while others need a combination of step and counter flashing to ensure water runoff doesn’t leak into the attic.

Underlayment

Before installing the shingles and flashings, the roofers make sure that they install a new underlayment material over the roof decking or sheathing. Made of either felt or rubber, it serves as the secondary barrier that helps protect the indoors from water leaks. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and performance of asphalt shingle roofing systems.
