What Are French Drains?

If you have a permanently damp spot on your property, a French drain is a simple solution that you should try. Read on to learn more about French drains.

What Are French Drains?

A French drain is a gravel-lined ditch built with an embedded pipe that carries water away from your home. Like gutters, it collects rainwater as it runs off your roof, making sure the water won’t settle near your foundation or basement.

French drains manage water runoff at ground level. They prevent “wet” basements, which typically occur when water seeps through the foundation and leaks.

When Do You Need a French Drain

Experts suggest that a French drain is beneficial to homes that have drainage issues or if water keeps getting into the basement. It can also be an option if you’re constructing a retaining wall on a hillside. Here are some uses for these drains:

  • Basement water – If water is getting into your basement, you should install a deep French drain. It should run around the perimeter of your home at the footing level.

  • Retaining wall – If you’re building a retaining wall on a hillside, the French drain should be added behind the first course of stones or blocks.

  • Surface water – Your French drain should be shallow and installed horizontally across your property and directly uphill of the area you want to dry out.

Do not hesitate to consult your contractor regarding your gutters, downspouts and drainage. Ensure that these components are in good condition, and they won’t interfere with the French drain once it has been installed.
